Four Syrian Soldiers Killed by Israeli Airstrikes on Damascus

The attack marks at least the 21st time Israel has bombed Syria this year

Israeli airstrikes targeted the Syrian capital of Damascus early Monday morning, killing four Syrian soldiers and wounding four more, Syria’s SANA news agency has reported.

“At around 02:20 am on Monday, the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial act of aggression from the direction of occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some sites in Damascus,” a Syrian military source told SANA.

“Our air defenses intercepted the missiles and shot down some of them, and the aggression resulted in the martyrdom of four army personnel and the injury of four others, in addition to causing some material damages,” the source added.

The attack marked at least the 21st Israeli bombing of Syria this year. Israel rarely acknowledges individual attacks in Syria, but earlier this year, Israeli Defense Yoav Gallant said that the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled airstrikes in Syria since it came to power at the end of December 2022.

Israel frames its attacks on Syria as operations against Iran and Hezbollah’s presence in the country. But the bombings frequently kill or injure Syrian soldiers and civilians, although some members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have been killed by Israeli bombings in Syria this year.
