Israeli warplanes launched strikes in Syria early on Monday, targeting military positions in the southwest Daraa province. The Israeli military also reported strikes in Lebanon as the risk of Israel’s Gaza war turning into a full-blown regional war continues to rise.
The Israeli military said the strikes in Syria were in response to rocket fire that came from Syria. While the strikes could be related to Israel’s Gaza war, Israel frequently bombed Syria with impunity before the conflict and has stepped up strikes since.
A Syrian military source told Syria’s SANA news agency that the Israeli strikes caused some material damage and reported no casualties. “At around 1:35 am on Monday, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial act of aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting two positions of our armed forces in Daraa countryside,” the source said.
Monday’s airstrikes marked at least the 31st time Israel has bombed Syria this year. Since the October 7 Hamas attack, Israeli airstrikes have disabled the Damascus and Aleppo airport several times.
The Israeli military said its strikes in Lebanon targeted Hezbollah sites and were in response to rocket fire. Since October 7, Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire on a near daily basis. Dozens of Hezbollah fighters and some civilians, including a Reuters journalist, have been killed on the Lebanon side of the border by Israeli strikes.
