On Wednesday, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) took responsibility for the October 2022 truck bombing of the Crimean Bridge that connects Crimea to the Russian mainland.
While it’s been clear that Ukraine was behind the bombing, which killed three people, Kyiv has not officially taken credit. SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk made the comments during an appearance on television where he was unveiling a new SBU postage stamp with the head of Ukraine’s national postal service, Igor Smelyansky.
“There were many different operations, special operations. We’ll be able to speak about some of them publicly and aloud after the victory, we will not talk at all about others,” Malyuk said. “It is one of our actions, namely the destruction of the Crimean Bridge on October 8 last year.”
In a clip Smelyansky posted on Twitter, he is seen wearing a t-shirt with a picture of a freight train burning on the Crimean Bridge after the October 2022 bombing. In the aftermath of the incident, Ukraine’s national postal service released stamps commemorating the attack.
The October 2022 attack on the Crimean Bridge led to a major escalation of the war as Russia responded by starting large-scale missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. The bridge was targeted again earlier this month, an attack that killed two people and injured their young daughter.
Ukraine has not officially taken credit for the latest Crimean Bridge bombing, but Ukrainian officials speaking anonymously to the media have said it was a joint operation between the Ukrainian Navy and the SBU.
