Israeli airstrikes targeted the Syrian city of Homs early Sunday morning, Syria’s SANA news agency reported.
“At around 12:20 am today, the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the direction northeast of Beirut, targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Hom,” a military source told SANA.
The SANA report said that Syrian air defenses responded and that the strikes only caused material damage. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) claimed one member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed, but the claim hasn’t been confirmed.
A Syrian air defense missile launched in response to the airstrikes was launched into Israel and exploded in mid-air. Reports from Israel said shrapnel from the missile landed in the Israeli city of Rahat, causing minor damage to buildings but no injuries.
The Israeli military announced that it launched strikes at a Syrian air defense battery after the Syrian missile shrapnel landed in Rahat. The Israeli military did not mention the initial bombardment of Homs, as Israel rarely acknowledges individual strikes in Syria.
According to The Cradle, the airstrikes in Homs marked the 19th time Israel bombed Syria this year. In May, Israeli Defense Yoav Gallant said that the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled airstrikes in Syria since it came to power at the end of December 2022.
