Israeli airstrikes hit targets outside of the Syrian capital of Damascus early Wednesday, wounding at least one Syrian soldier, Syria’s SANA news agency reported.
“At about 1:05 am on Wednesday, the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial act of aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some sites southwest of Damascus, and the army air defenses intercepted the aggression’s missiles and shot down some of them,” a military source told SANA.
The source said the soldier was “seriously” wounded and that the strikes also caused material damage. Israel rarely acknowledges individual airstrikes in Syria and hasn’t commented on the latest attack.
Last month, Israeli Defense Yoav Gallant said that the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubled airstrikes in Syria since it came to power at the end of December 2022. Israel frames its operations in Syria as strikes against Iran and Hezbollah, but they often kill and injure Syrians.
According to The Cradle, the Wednesday strikes marked the 18th time Israel has bombed Syria in 2023. It also marked the 13th time Israel attacked Syria since a devastating earthquake killed thousands of Syrians in February.
